Amy, who survived after the attempts of suicide, shares his feelings and tells what words and actions can help a person on the verge of a breakdown.

As a person who tried to commit suicide, I would like others to understand how I feel at that moment that they could help those who are in a similar situation in the future.

I was covered by a stunning sense of despair, the feeling that life would never change for the better, I was sure that nobody needed it because of depression. Unhappy, deprived of strength, scattered, I believed that it was useless for work, not interesting to friends and my partner would be better with another wife, and children with another mother.

When you are in a depressed mood, you do not think what a blow to your loved ones will be. When I felt bad, more than anything I wanted to feel that I was not a hindrance and my loved ones still love me, no matter what.

What I hated the most and what made me feel even more worthless, so these are peppy calls to happiness: “Above my nose! You’ll be all right. Get a hold of yourself!”Did they really not know that if I could just make an effort over myself and become happy, I would have done so?

Even when we deliberately move away from society, we need sympathy and that someone has embraced us

Sometimes everything that was needed is so that someone just hugs me. A mass of studies confirm the importance of physical contact in case of mental health. I can confirm this – sometimes embrace is more important than words. Even when people who plan to take their own lives intentionally withdraw from society, in fact they need sympathy and that someone put them in arms.

I am glad that my attempt was unsuccessful. Having overcome the worst period, I learned to appreciate what I have. I am grateful that I have a house, health, a family who loves me and whom I love, the son who needs my mother to be near. When you feel so depressed that the only thing you want is to finally end, you know: everything will definitely change for the better. This will take some time, but there are many things for which it is worth living. You just need to find them.

How to help a loved one

You learned, realized that a loved one was on the verge of suicide? It is important to provide him with support: to come and silently hold the hand, hug, listen, make it clear that you are always nearby, do not condemn him for thoughts and behavior.

It is important not to impose help, but to listen, try to understand what it needs especially acute. Invite for a walk or run, put a familiar film “background” – it does not matter that, most likely, he will not follow the plot turns. The main thing

for him is to feel a friendly participation, to understand that someone needs it in a depressive state. All this can distract a person from suicidal thoughts and become a real salvation, the bridge back to normal life.

If, due to circumstances, you are alone with a person overwhelmed by black thoughts for a long time, do not forget about yourself, about your health. Find the time for classes bringing psychological unloading. And most importantly: even if it seems to you that you are generally doing a good job, it is important to convince a loved one to contact a qualified specialist.
